Jointing Failure
This is the measure of time lost because of joint/splice construction problems which have been identified in the ship's repair Completion Reports (CRs). The failure is calculated from the moment a problem is declared in the CR until the ship has recovered the situation (i.e. it is back to the point in the joint construction process where the problem first occurred). The measure will include time lost due to bad weather if it is clear that entry into the bad weather window happened solely because of joint/splice construction problems.
NB: Joint construction problems can be caused by deficiencies in any of the following:
- Joint Design
- Quality of Supplied Components
- Document Control
- Jointer Training & Competence
- Equipment Calibration & Maintenance
- Shipboard Environment Standards
- Cable Conformance
Although some of these parameters are not the direct responsibility of the ship operators it is incumbent upon them (as end users of the technology) to gather hard evidence and provide appropriate feedback whenever joint construction problems are experienced.
